Background of the Study
Social media platforms have become key drivers of linguistic change, with Instagram and TikTok leading the way in Nigeria. This study examines the impact of social media trends on Nigerian phonetics by comparing content from Instagram and TikTok. Phonetic features such as pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns are being reshaped by the visual and auditory demands of these platforms (Eze, 2023). Instagram content, characterized by its polished and curated presentation, often adheres to standardized pronunciation norms. In contrast, TikTok, with its emphasis on short, dynamic videos, tends to encourage more experimental and spontaneous speech patterns. This comparative study will analyze a corpus of audio-visual content to document variations in phonetic features and explore the influence of platform-specific trends on everyday language use. The research aims to determine whether digital trends are leading to the convergence or divergence of phonetic norms in Nigeria, ultimately affecting communication styles and cultural expression (Eze, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing influence of social media on language, there is limited research comparing the phonetic impacts of platforms like Instagram and TikTok in Nigeria. Existing studies have largely focused on visual or lexical trends, neglecting the phonetic dimension that shapes spoken communication. This gap hampers our understanding of how platform-specific trends influence pronunciation and intonation, potentially leading to a divergence from traditional speech norms. Without a comparative analysis, it is difficult to assess whether these digital trends enhance or detract from effective communication and cultural identity. Addressing this gap is essential for understanding the broader implications of social media on Nigerian phonetics (Eze, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To compare phonetic features in Nigerian Instagram and TikTok content.
To assess the impact of digital trends on pronunciation and intonation.
To determine the cultural implications of evolving phonetic norms.
Research Questions
What are the key phonetic differences between Instagram and TikTok content?
How do social media trends influence Nigerian pronunciation and intonation?
What are the cultural implications of these phonetic changes?
Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the impact of social media on Nigerian phonetics, offering valuable information for linguists, media practitioners, and educators. By comparing Instagram and TikTok, the research informs strategies to preserve traditional speech patterns while embracing digital innovation. The findings contribute to understanding the dynamic relationship between technology and language evolution (Eze, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing phonetic features in Nigerian content on Instagram and TikTok and does not extend to other social media platforms.
